Straight line from top to bottom, with side splits to make it practical for walking.
The elastic waistband allows for a relaxed fit and no need for zips or button/buttonholes for the novice sewer.
Choose your own fabric
Dress it up or dress it down to suit the occasion. Use a medium weight linen or cotton for a casual, summery skirt, which you could pair with a simple tank or T. Alternatively, use a heavier weight fabric for winter or office wear, paired with ankle boots and a knit top.
